Photography Workshop & Masterclass

Program overview

SEEING OTHERWISE

Two photography courses in Belgrade and Budapest with Valentino Bianchi and Camillo Pasquarelli will guide you through digital and analogue, visual and chemical processes and visual anthropology.

Starting from key questions around the relationship between images and the social sciences, the course explores how anthropological perspectives and methods can inform documentary photography. Participants will be introduced to core concepts and approaches from visual anthropology, including ethnographic research, participant observation, interviewing, and collaborative practices such as photovoice and photo-elicitation, alongside critical reflections on image-making and representation.

Through the analysis of landmark works in ethnographic photography and cinema, the course examines the evolution of visual languages and contemporary approaches within the field.

Masterclass (Budapest)

MASTERCLASS: Budapest
April 25th-26th, with a welcome drink on the 24th
Price: 300€

Through the analysis of landmark works in ethnographic photography and cinema, the course examines the evolution of visual languages and contemporary approaches within the field.

The masterclass combines theoretical lectures on how to conceive and structure a photographic project, mentoring sessions to discuss participants’ ongoing projects, portfolio review, and dedicated moments of fieldwork and assignments, allowing participants to apply ideas in practice and receive guided feedback.

The course addresses both the conceptual and practical dimensions of building a visual narrative, from research and development to editing and presentation, while also considering different forms of dissemination such as books, exhibitions, magazines, and other platforms.

Workshop (Belgrade)

WORKSHOP: Belgrade
April 28th-May 4th
Price: 1200€

This course is designed for those interested in exploring visual anthropology and integrating its perspectives into photographic practice.

What does it mean to adopt an anthropological approach to images?
How can photography engage with methods developed within social sciences?

The workshop combines classroom lectures with extended fieldwork. Over the seven days, participants develop an individual/collective photographic project, alternating theory with on-site research and image-making. Daily collective reviews support critical reflection and ongoing dialogue between practice and theory.

Analog and darkroom section

This workshop treats analog photography as an autonomous method within visual anthropology. Through field shooting and hands-on darkroom work, participants engage with film as a material, temporal, and relational process in which slowness and attention to the presence of photographer and subject are central. Film’s delay, manual development, and chemical variability are used productively: imperfections and accidents become research data rather than faults.

Mentors
Camillo Pasquarelli

Camillo Pasquarelli is deeply inspired by his education in Anthropology to lead visual investigations based on long-term immersion in social contexts.

He collaborates with magazines like New York Times, Financial Times, M Le Monde Magazine, Time, National Geographic, and Internazionale.

Valentino Bianchi

Valentino Bianchi is an Italian photographer based in Paris, working across commercial and artistic contexts. His practice is grounded in film photography and darkroom printing.

His photographs have been featured in GQ, Rolling Stone, Repubblica, Internazionale, Perimetro, and Palprint.
